During each shift our students are paired with and work directly with a single attending. All shifts have one to one student to attending ratio to maximize the educational environment and provide the optimal experience throughout the rotation.
In emergency medicine, clinical care will often vary between providers. To improve the overall monthly student experience, each student is paired with a specific attending for one-third of his or her clinical shifts. This experience provides some continuity throughout the month. This fosters a familiarity and comfort between student and supervisor that has resulted in more autonomy and ability to perform more procedures for the student. This has received positive feedback by our former students. Typically, the role of preceptor does not include writing letters of recommendation for students, nor interactions outside of the clinical area.
